Young music industry multi-faceted powerhouse Yen Strange is here with her first new single ‘Pixel’ – a track which talks to the idea that “pixels are like people sitting in their right place to make up the bigger picture.”
But, ‘Pixel’ also poses a really important question: “Do we really need to have a perfectly functioning TV screen?” That’s something Yen aims to address with this new, auto-tune fuelled, electro-pop future hit.
Before we dive right on into this one, let’s talk a bit about who Yen, real name Annabelle Scobie, is. You may have heard of a band called Spit Chewy, who, of late, have been tearing up the country with their endearing indie-pop. Led by Scobie, Spit Chewy have been playing shows all over Australia, after only becoming a band last year.
Scobie’s solo project sees her take an electronica turn, with auto-tune, making the most of her laptop, guitar and keyboards. Not only did she make the most of a small selection of instruments and programs available to her, but she did the entire thing herself.
“I took inspiration from dance music while staying true to the indie pop dreamer I tend to be. Electro auto-tuned vocals do stick out, I thought, when I’d heard them on rap songs,” Yen says.
The singer continues, “so I thought I’d give them a spin in my own way because I hadn’t heard them a lot in indie, or at least in a way that was purposeful.”
Lyrically, a focal point that really makes you think is when Yen sings “Everyone thinks that they know it all, but we’re so small.”
