It’s a collaboration that most wouldn’t have seen coming, but Aussie pop-rock outfit 5 Seconds Of Summer have teamed up with Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello for latest single, ‘Teeth’.

When Sydney’s 5 Seconds Of Summer first arrived on the scene back in 2011, few could have imagined the future that lay ahead of them.

First appearing as musicians on YouTube, it took only a few short years before the group were topping charts around the world, selling out tours, and winning award after award.

Now, following the release of their 2018 album, Youngblood, the group have unleashed their latest single, featuring a guest appearance from Rage Against The Machine axeman Tom Morello.

Speaking to Beats 1’s Zane Lowe about the track, which appears on the 13 Reasons Why: Season 3 soundtrack, Luke Hemmings and Michael Clifford explained how their new track saw them working with Ryan Tedder, Andrew Wyatt, Charlie Puth, and the iconic guitarist.

“We actually did have a fourth horseman,” they explained. “Tom Morello actually played on the track as well.

“We’re grateful enough to have him on the track and he plays the last outro. That’s a big feat for us as well. We were rehearsing; we missed the opportunity to be there but we have recorded proof that it was him.”

“‘Teeth’ came about after a month or two long blur of writing and pushing ourselves to go a step further than Youngblood,” Hemmings explained in a statement.

“It was a tumultuous time in my life and the lyrics in the song definitely reflect that. It speaks lyrically about a trying time in my current relationship. Musically it’s another step forward from ‘Easier’ and really embraces industrial sounds and rhythms.”

While Tom Morello is undoubtedly an interesting addition to this industrial-influenced tune, a cursory look at the credits for the track on Spotify makes mention of Bernard Sumner, Stephen Morris, Gillian Gilbert, and Peter Hook as songwriters, who you might recognise as members of New Order.

While some folks over on Reddit have attempted to work out just what New Order contributed to the song, it seems as though there may have been a sample of the percussion for ‘Blue Monday’ used throughout the track.

Whatever the case, we certainly didn’t envision 2019 being the year in which 5 Seconds Of Summer, Tom Morello, and New Order all receive credits on the same song.
