Community radio music presenters and music directors often have an encyclopaedic knowledge of local music, Australian artists, and possess an insatiable thirst to keep their ears ahead of the curve.

So in this Tone Deaf series, the Australian Music Radio Airplay Project (Amrap) invites music directors to highlight new Aussie tunes that you might have missed.

In this edition, Taylah Strang, breakfast host of Perth’s 6RTR, contributes with a selection of tracks currently making their way to community radio through Amrap’s music distribution service ‘AirIt’.

Check out Taylah’s selections below and if you’re a musician you can apply here to have your music distributed for free to community radio on Amrap’s AirIt.

Also, Brisbane’s 4ZZZ is also teaming up with Amrap to present Sounds Like Community Radio, a live broadcast featuring some of the finest Aussie artists on the scene today, hosted by the people who help bring their music to you each week. It all kicks off on Tuesday, September 3rd, so check out the Facebook page for more info!

This week’s 6 best Australian artists

Web Rumors – ‘IOU’s’

Frontwoman Em Burrows says it best, this song is a roaring tribute to ’80s pop icon Sade. A fun, fantastic teaser into what Web Rumors are all about, unearthing those obscure and distant electro-disco & new wave sounds and catapulting them into the now with huge sax and aesthetic to match.

Jamilla – ‘She.’

There’s some huge R&B vibes from Perth’s own Jamilla on new track ‘She.’. In the same vein as its predecessor, ‘Bloom’, ‘She.’ manages to delve even deeper into themes of sexuality, gender, and self with Jamilla’s smooth vocals melting all over the track.

Sampa The Great – ‘Freedom’

It doesn’t get much better than this. As we patiently wait for the debut record from the Sydney-based rapper to drop, we’ve been given another taste in new single, ‘Freedom’. Turning yet another corner stylistically Sampa has managed to incorporate synths & uplifting lyrics into her effortless flow and style.

Tram Cops – ‘California Way’

Melbourne’s Tram Cops, the solo project of Michael Vince Moin, has been kicking around for a couple of years, but the title track from the forthcoming record, ‘California Way’, confirmed what I already knew – he’s a bloody genius! It kind of sounds like a softly spoken Beach Boys track. And I’m here for it.

Ursula – ‘Ambulance’

Perth’s Ursula hit the nail on the head with their slow-burning return to the scene, ‘Ambulance’. It’s all the best bits from their 2016 efforts, garage pop with shoegaze and fuzz thrown in for good measure, but this time with even more vocal melodies and garage.

Terrible Signal – ‘Retire’

Although this one has been doing the rounds since May it still finds its way into high rotation in my personal listening downtime. Melbourne-via-Perth music machine Vin Buchanan-Simpson has made short work of the big move with a string of singles since touching down on the east-coast.

‘Retire’ is just another example of why I love Terrible Signal, it’s curly and crazy shenanigans brought to you by catchy drums, searing synth and erratic lyrics.
