Deftones performed a cut from their fabled lost record, Eros, during the second annual Dia De Los Deftones Festival in San Diego on Saturday night.

Eros was famously shelved in 2008 after their late bassist, Chi Cheng, was involved in a tragic automobile accident. Eros has since remained unfinished and, for the most part, unheard. Though fans were surprised with a live performance of album track ‘Smile’ for the first time during the festival.

Before launching into the blistering track, frontman Chino Moreno prefaced the performance with “this one’s for my man, Cheng.”  You can watch fan-filmed footage of the affair below.

It’s been an exciting week for Deftones fans. The band recently revealed that their new album will “definitely be out next year.”

In an interview with NBC 7 San Diego, Moreno revealed that the band have been “working on our record for about a year now.”

“I’m hoping that it’ll be earlier on in the year, but I feel like once I give a definitive answer or speculate exactly when, I feel like we’ll be held to it, so I kind of want to continue on,” he elaborated.

“Of course, it’ll be out next year, hopefully earlier than later. Our biggest thing is making sure that it’s good. We’ll be performing it, once it’s out, for the next two or three years, so we want to be sure it’s the best it can be and want to make everyone happy — including ourselves.”

The band’s last full-length offering came in the form of 2016’s Gore.
