Stoner rock icons of our times, Sleep, are apparently going to be putting their name into accuracy, terminating the band into an indefinite hiatus as of January 1st, 2020.
Stoner metal legends Sleep are teasing a hiatus following their 2019 shows. An ‘80s sci-fi/horror screen was shared on the band’s Facebook page, detailing a period of “hypersleep” coming Jan. 1, 2020. It’s definitely on brand to put the band Sleep to sleep, but this also means that fans will only have this year remaining to catch them live.
The 2010s have been glorious for Sleep’s reawakening, with the band coming back from their slumber with their first song in over a decade, ‘The Clarity’ back in 2014. Since then the band have toured around the globe sparingly every year, right up until they released The Sciences on 4/20 in 2018. Ever since The Sciences, the band have been hot-boxing venues at a more frequent rate, but it looks like all this is coming to a close in the year 2020.
Sleep will finish off 2019 with a trio of gigs at Thalia Hall in Chicago, Ill. The Dec. 29, 30 and 31 gigs will be their last for an undetermined amount of time, meaning the new year will kick off alongside their hiatus.
In the Facebook post that you can see above, posted onto Sleep’s main page, you can see that the band have named the New Years Eve Thalia Hall show as their current mission, with a scheduled hypersleep for the first day of 2020. They will be missed is all we can really say.
“Prep hypersleep facil for indef duration” reads the post, with a crew of 3 listed and ‘Y’ typed in for positive confirmation.
Guitarist Matt Pike is currently touring with High on Fire on a co-headlining bill with Power Trip. High on Fire will likely be Pike’s priority come 2020, while frontman Al Cisneros and drummer Jason Roeder are expected to continue work with OM and Neurosis, respectively.
