Thelma Plum has taken to Instagram to reveal that she has tested positive for COVID-19. On Monday evening, the Better in Blak songwriter issued a lengthy statement, confirming her diagnosis and emphasising the importance of social distancing during this delicate time.
“I am currently being managed by the Brisbane Metro North Public Health Unit and they’re taking very good care of me,” Plum writes. “At this time the Dr wants to keep me here until at least Friday, but the rules around being released are constantly changing.”
“I don’t even really know where to begin, what a wild ride this last month has been for the world. All I can do is stress how important it is to be kind and compassionate to each other during this time & that we need to be looking out for & prioritising the most vulnerable people.
“This means skip that party, bar, restaurant or show you really want to go to & practice social distancing.”
She then went on to express her anxieties over the lack of action taken by the government amid the growing pandemic.
“The lack of action taken by the government has left me feeling quite anxious and hopeless, as it has many other people. Schools need to be shut down but there need to be structures in place that can ensure low-income families and vulnerable people aren’t being left in the dark. People need to work from home and if they aren’t able to the government needs to step in & financially help. Putting a temporary moratorium on things like rent, bills & mortgages could be a great start.”

As COVID-19 continues to spread across the country, many are choosing to take part in “flattening the curve” by social distancing. The idea of increasing social-distancing is part of an effort to flatten the curve to the pandemic. Social distancing will help slow the spread of the virus, in order to protect the Australian healthy system from becoming overwhelmed.
“I want to say that this is a pre-emptive move to get ahead of the curve,” explains Australia’s Chief Medical Officer Professor Brendan Murphy.
“Social distancing can be difficult for the community, we understand that, and we understand that the community is with us on the need to try and slow the spread of this virus in our community.”
