During these chaotic times, it’s essential that we all have a treasure trove of films we can tuck into to make us feel a little less manic during self-isolation. I can not stress to you how important choosing these films strategically is. Last night I made the grave error of watching Synecdoche, New York — it was obviously brilliant but its crippling sadness sent me spiralling down an unrelenting pit of morbid self-hatred. Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker has taken to Instagram to share his five favourite films to watch whilst stuck indoors.

“My Significant Other had the great idea of asking friends to recommend five favourite films to help while away the hours whilst we’re all stuck indoors,” writes Jarvis. “Guess who got asked to go first?” He adds “I’ll bet you’ve seen some (if not all) of them before – but never under these circumstances. Stay safe.”

Check out Jarvis’ choices below.

Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory

“It’s pretty difficult to be in a bad mood whilst watching this film. Gene Wilder’s first appearance is a moment of pure movie magic.”

Batman Returns

“The Penguin’s Gotham City is frighteningly similar to Tr*mp’s America. Listen out for a v good version of “U Can’t Touch This” at an arty party.”

Glastonbury Fayre
I was so looking forward to playing at Glastonbury’s 50th birthday this year. This Nic Roeg film from 1971 can help us get over the disappointment of the cancellation.

The Leopard

“If we want things to stay as they are, things will have to change.” -thus says Burt Lancaster towards the end of Visconti’s masterpiece. Wise words.”

So there you have it.

Jarvis Cocker will release Beyond The Pale — his first new album in over a decade on May 1st via Rough Trade records. You can listen to single ‘House Music All Night Long’ below.
