Introducing… the new era of Australian indie darlings Last Dinosaurs.

The trio had mastered indie rock – who could forget the catchy slickness of ‘Zoom’ – and now their sonic quest has moved them on to explore French house.

‘Flying’ is a perfect first foray into the genre; and with its ’90s nu-disco twist, the track hits in all the right places. This could be partly thanks to the band’s past tips-of-the-hat with live covers honouring Jamiroquai, Spiller, Sophie Ellis Bextor, Modjo and Daft Punk. But it could also be Lachlan Caskey’s sojourn through European clubs, care of an older Spaniard friend.

Guitarist Lachlan Caskey said ‘Flying’ was inspired by a trip through Europe:

“I had to either be wallowing in loneliness, or enjoying the freedoms, let’s say, of a single young man. My friend from Spain, about 12 years my senior whom I consider to be a brother, was responsible to helping me capitalise on this time, and for a period of about six months took me out every Friday to, admittedly, tacky clubs and shithouse bars.

“This formative period of going to euro-dance clubs and trying my luck got me vibing on Nu-Disco again. I can romanticise this period through a cool and corny lens of 90s Nu-Disco and that makes me happy.”

The video for ‘Flying’ is a wild ride of fun and ’90s-inspired drunken colour, directed by band member Michael Sloane. The track is a taste from the band’s upcoming fourth studio album, where we can expect a lot more ‘nu-disco’ delectables.

It also marks Last Dinosaurs’ first release since non-album single, ‘FMU’, last year. ‘FMU’ arrived after their first album in five years, Yumeno Garden, in 2018.
