Dave Ellefson is gearing up to release his new self-titled solo record, and the Megadeth bass player has dropped one of the tunes early; a cover of a Post Malone track.

Posty’s 2018 track ‘Over Now’, lifted from his beerbongs & bentleys record, has received a much heavier, metal-tinged cover from Ellefson. The tune has been dropped ahead of Ellefson’s planned  October release date for the full EP.

For the cover, Ellefson is joined by Thom Hazaert on vocals, Bumblefoot and Andy Martongelli on guitars and Paolo Caaridi on the kit.

“We’re all fans of Posty, and he’s also been a huge fan of Megadeth and all things metal,” said Ellefson in a statement.

“The old adage used to be that if you could strip a song down to just an acoustic guitar and a vocal, you probably had a great song. But times have changed now, that if you can take a song from another genre, and seamlessly transform it to a completely different genre, it just proves what a great song it really is.”

It’s the second release from Ellefson recently, after he dropped a single titled ‘Simple Truth’ last month. The track is set to be included on his debut release later in the year, and all proceeds from its release went to the Italian Red Cross and their efforts in fighting the global coronavirus pandemic.

He’s also released a play-through video for the single, if you’re bored at home during isolation!

Meanwhile, Post Malone has proven his rock chops recently, with a killer live stream of Nirvana covers, joined by blink-182’s Travis Barker. His efforts impressed the music community at large and even drawing praise from the band’s founding bassist Krist Novoselic.

The cover is below, and head here to listen to Posty’s original for comparison.
