SUNN O))) might make music that feels like it has the power to usher in the apocalypse, but beneath those harrowing hoods is a heart of gold. The black metal wizards have raised over $10,000 for coronavirus relief.
On May 1st, Bandcamp waived it’s fifteen-percent revenue share for twenty-four hours as a way to help put money directly in the pockets of artists who’s livelihoods been upheaved amid the coronavirus pandemic. Sunn O))) used this initiative to divert funds to the Global Foodbanking Network.
The band offered up two unheard live rehearsal demos from their 2019 record, Life Metal, on May 1st. Recorded by the band’s core members Greg Anderson and Stephen O’Malley in Anderson’s rehearsal studio in Los Angeles.
“Thanks to you our great friends and fans, we’ve raised over $10,000 for the Global FoodBanking Network through the LIFE METAL Rehearsal demos Bandcamp fundraiser on May 1st,” the band shared in a statement.
“Stephen and Greg and all of SUNN O))) would like to send our gratitude and hails to you all for your support, kindness and empathy for this fundraiser.
“It’s marvellous to be able to open a channel of support and charity through SUNN O)))’s music and concept in this challenging and strange time.”
Although one of the industries that have been hit the hardest by the coronavirus pandemic, the music community has really come to the forefront, helping in whatever way they can. Earlier this month Pantera raised $100,000 for MusiCares’ coronavirus appeal through the release of a social distancing-themed t-shirt. April saw Corey Taylor auction off a treasure trove of guitars from his personal collection raising $150,000 for Direct Relief.

On June 5th, and July 3rd (the first Friday of each month) Bandcamp will once again be waiving their revenue share on all sales from midnight to midnight PDT on each day. It’s a nice, achievable way of putting money back in to the pockets of artists and we wholeheartedly encourage you to get involved.
