Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield, the celebrated bassist who played pivotal roles in both Stone Roses and Primal Scream, has died at the age of 63.

The news was confirmed by Mani’s brother Greg Mounfield through a statement posted on social media (as per Rolling Stone). “It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to announce the sad passing of my brother,” Greg wrote, adding that Gary has been “reunited” with his late wife Imelda, who died of cancer in 2023. The cause of Mani’s death has not been announced.

Mani’s musical journey began with Stone Roses, where his distinctive bass lines helped define the Manchester band’s groundbreaking sound during their late 1980s and early 1990s heyday. His contributions to classic songs cemented his reputation as one of Britain’s most respected bassists, with his rhythmic foundation supporting the band’s genre-defining approach to alternative rock.

Following Stone Roses’ initial dissolution, Mani joined Primal Scream in 1996, bringing his expertise to the Glasgow band’s evolving sound. His tenure with Primal Scream saw him contribute to several critically acclaimed releases, further establishing his credentials within the British music scene.

Tributes have poured in from across the music industry following news of Mani’s death. Stone Roses frontman Ian Brown kept his message brief but poignant, writing “REST IN PEACE MANI X” on social media. The Charlatans’ Tim Burgess offered a more detailed tribute, sharing: “I shared this photo a week or so ago on Mani’s birthday – It never failed to bring a smile to my face – and that was exactly the same for the man himself. One of the absolute best in every way – such a beautiful friend Love you Mani x x Never to be forgotten.”

The timing of Mani’s death is particularly poignant given his planned return to public engagement. The bassist was scheduled to embark on a UK speaking tour beginning in September 2026, which would have offered fans an intimate opportunity to hear his stories and insights from decades within the music industry.
