Tone Deaf is proudly co-presenting Cherry Rock 011, featuring Jesse ‘The Devil’ Hughes, a reformed Died Pretty and Barrence Whitfield & The Savages. It also features appearances from some of Australia’s greatest rock n’ roll bands, so we thought we’d catch up with them and find out what makes Cherry Bar, AC/DC Lane and Melbourne so special to them. Amy Findlay from Stonefield gave us the lowdown.
Can you remember the first time you went to Cherry Bar? What did you like so much about it?
Oh yes I certainly do remember the first time I went to Cherry! It was so refreshing to walk into a venue that played amazing music between and after the bands played. I also loved how chilled out everyone is there. There’s no pretentious bull crap. It’s such a good vibe!
What’s the one song you hear at Cherry that makes you want to get up on stage and bust out the rock star moves?
Pretty much everything! Paranoid always makes me want to bust out the moves, but particularly anything Zeppelin – my favourite band.
Growing up, what bands turned you in to the rock pigs you now are?
Zeppelin, Zappa & Hendrix are the magic three.
We encourage responsible drinking, so if the owners shout you just the one drink – what would it be?
I’m overage so that shouldn’t be a problem! Last time I had Long Island Iced Teas. It would be nice to keep the tradition, but they are a little deadly. Perhaps I should stick to vodka and orange juice, (much to my dentist’s dismay.)
Which of the artists playing Cherry Rock 011 would you most like to collaborate with?
Barrence Whitfield to put the funk into the mix.
If you were given a 20 minute DJ set at Cherry, what songs would you play to keep the crowd rocking?
Rock and Roll – Led Zeppelin, Paranoid – Black Sabbath, Foxy Lady – Hendrix, Long Way To The Top – ACDC, I Shot The Sheriff – Bob Marley, Pleasure and Pain – The Divinyls, Voodoo Child – Hendrix…
We don’t promise you’ll get it all on the day at Cherry Rock 011, but what’s on your ideal rider?
Mixed lollies, lots of water, a kettle and some beers for the ‘rents.
Everyone’s had a pretty wild night out at Cherry over the years. What happened on your wildest night – that we can print?
Uh I’m not a crazy party animal, but my wildest night is probably better left unexplained seeing as friends and family will be reading this haha.
