In the wake of Whitney Houston’s tragic death, less than 24 hours before one of the biggest nights on the music industry calendar, some of the world’s best musical artists came together in Los Angeles to celebrate the best new music of the last year at 54th annual Grammy Awards.
Host LL Cool J kicked off proceedings with a tribute to the fallen star saying “The only thing that feels right is to start with a prayer for the woman that we love, for our fallen sister Whitney Houston. Though she is gone too soon, we remain truly blessed to have been touched by her beautiful spirit.”
Kanye West had led the nominations with seven nods including song of the year and best rap-sung collaboration, but it was Adele and Foo Fighters who took home the most gongs. Adele won a total of six Grammy awards, including the ‘big categories’ like Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Album of the Year.
The London-based singer took home the gong for every single category in which she was nominated, becoming only the second female artist in Grammy Award history, alongside Beyonce, to win the most awards on a single night.
“I can’t believe I’m getting emotional already,” she said after picking up the award for Best Pop Solo Performance. “And seeing as it’s a vocal performance, I need to thank my doctors, I suppose, who brought my voice back.”
The night’s other big winners, the Foo Fighters walked away with five Grammy Awards, notably winning for Best hard Rock/ Metal Performance, and Best Rock Performance.
Indie darlings Bon Iver also walked home with the awards for Best New Artist, and Best Alternative Music Album, beating out Death Cab For Cutie, Foster The People, My Morning Jacket, and Radiohead.
