Blues/ Rock n roll duo Little Hurricane are on the eve of releasing their second album Gold Fever (out May 2nd via Shock Records).

Gold Fever was recorded in historical Julian, California in an old apple-packing house built in the 1800s. The house was built from foot-and-a-half thick stone and crammed with thousands of books left behind by its author-owners, offering raw sonic sound alongside their analogue equipment.

Drummer C.C Spina gave us a track by track run down on Gold Fever to get you ready for its release this Friday. Listen below.

Summer Air

“‘Summer Air’ is the very last track we wrote for Gold Fever, so we thought it fitting to put it first. The song describes how we felt waiting to release our album, just ready for the new year to come! It was influenced by our time touring with The Specials.”

Upside of Down

“‘Upside of Down’ is my favourite track on the album. It was also written a little later than the majority of the songs, and is one of the first times we have really tried to harmonize. It has a laid back rockabilly beat, and is written to reflect lives ups and downs.”

Sheep in Wolves Clothes

“‘Sheep in Wolves Clothes’ is the first single we released off of Gold Fever. Its very different than most of our songs, but we love the build it has. It also features several auxiliary instruments like a kalimba and melodica. The song is about enjoying the present moment you have with people you love.”

Boiling Water

“‘Boiling Water’ is one of the first songs we wrote for the album. It has a very distinct vibe to it, and we added the horns to make it feel more bubbley. We hired several sets of horn players to get the part right, and layered lots of percussion on top of it.”

No Man’s Land

“We wrote ‘No Man’s Land’ after a trip out to Noah Purifoy, an exhibit in the desert of San Diego. Its an outdoor sculpture yard that has acres of art created out of garbage. We wanted to write a song the embodied Noah, and how he must have felt creating art in the sweltering heat.”

Bones

“Tone was experimenting with some new riffs on his acoustic guitar when his dog Jedi perked up and was entranced by them. These riffs were turned into the song ‘Bones’, which also hints at references of Jedi throughout.”

Breathe

“‘Breathe’ was a song that Tone had been working on for years. Little Hurricane has recorded it several different ways, but the version that made the album is the simplest. We dropped all percussion for a simple tambourine under a towel, and let the vocals lead the song.”

Con Man

“‘Con Man’ is a song written about a break up. It has also been recorded several different ways, but this one we feel suits the mood best. Its one of the darker tracks, with more spacey drums and a lot of emotion.”

Sorry Son

“‘Sorry Son’ was written as a response to the Homewrecker track “Give em Hell.” It tells the story of drug addiction from the view point of an addicts parents. Its another darker track, and the instrumental bridge depicts a breaking point, where loving hurts too much.”

Superblues

“‘Superblues’ was the first song we ever wrote together. Its been recorded all sorts of ways, but we thought for Gold Fever, this more hard hitting, dark version worked best.”

Gold Fever

“We wrote ‘Gold Fever’ while recording the album in the gold mining town of Julian, CA. Its meant to be a kitchy take on the gold mining culture, and what California represented to so many people.”

Grand Canyon

“‘Grand Canyon’ is a very upbeat tune that we love to play live. Its more of a rockabilly inspired track, and we had our good friend Shannon of The Stone Foxes, record harp for it. We love it for live shows!”
