You may be sitting at your day job right now, reading through the pages of Tone Deaf and looking at the lives of the various touring artists we follow and envying what they have when you compare it to your own day-to-day.
Maybe you’re stuck in a cubicle, surrounded by coworkers, but really wish you were on a plane en route to a foreign country where thousands of screaming fans are waiting for you to take the stage. But the grass is always greener.
Taking to Twitter recently, superstar Australian DJ Alison Wonderland shared a heartfelt open letter in which she shines a light on the actual experience of touring as a solo act, comparing it to a regular job with co-workers and a support system.
“I know my life seems crazy and cool (which it f***ing is!) but being a touring artist also has a dark side,” Wonderland writes. “With many extreme highs come many extreme lows happening very closely to one another.”
“One minute you’re playing in front of thousands of people giving every part of your soul, next minute you’re alone in a room in a strange place with no real friends around you. Flying to different cities but never really feeling settled.”
Wonderland goes on to compare the touring life with that of someone with a regular day job, in which you’re given a support system and routine. “We don’t go to an office every day and see people… we are alone,” Wonderland writes.
“This is not a pity note at all,” Wonderland clarifies. “Don’t feel sorry for me. I feel so lucky to be able to do this because it’s the only thing I really feel passionate about. I will never stop creating and performing and giving.”
