The Aussie charts have seen somewhat of a friendly rivalry in action this week, with both The Waifs and King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard fighting for the number one position on the Aussie music charts this week.
The Waifs are this week celebrating the #1 chart debut of their eighth record Ironbark, while King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard have been relegated to a highly respectable #2 with their ninth album Microtonal Banana. With The Waifs celebrating their 25th year of existence, a #1 chart debut is a perfect way to celebrate for the Western Australian group. While King Gizz still have another 18 years before they reach their 25th anniversary, they’re on track to have a pretty good looking future on the charts at this rate.
Both The Waifs and King Gizz are joined in the album charts with Horrorshow’s Bardo State making its debut at #4 for the week, while Holy Holy celebrate their sophomore record Paint reaching #7 on the charts. Last week’s #1 placeholders, Busby Marou, drop down to #14 with Postcards From The Shell House, while Tash Sultana’s Notion is still hanging around the charts, settling at #25 for this week.
The singles charts show a different story for Aussie music, however. While Ed Sheeran’s previous grasp on the top three positions has been toppled by ‘Something Just Like This’, a disappointing collaboration between The Chainsmokers & Coldplay, one has to look down to #9 to see our first Aussie, and only top 10 entry, Pnau’s ‘Chameleon’. Our next Aussies in the single charts are Amy Shark’s ‘Adore’, sitting at #15, down from #10 last week, and Peking Duk’s ‘Stranger’, at #31, down from #25 on last week’s charts.
With Aussies on top of the albums charts for two weeks in a row, we can definitely be proud of the music our humble country is making, and while we’d like to see some more Aussie’s back in our single charts again, we can definitely remain hopeful that we’re bound to see an influx of Aussie talent in the top 10 soon enough.
