The past few months have been a crazy whirlwind of excitement for Melbourne muso Tyson O’Brien, more commonly recognised under his stage name DJ Generik, having topped the charts with his tune ‘The Weekend’ as well as landing a gig with Channel V.
In a recent interview with news.com, the producer detailed his exciting rise to glory, as well as revealing some pretty interesting trivia about his highschool days that were spent with the likes of Vance Joy’s James Keogh and Nick Murphy aka Chet Faker.
Believe it or not, the three successful musicians actually sung together in the St Kevin’s choir, O’Brien recounting the days of the old school yard, “It was always an interesting Wednesday after school, that’s for sure. We sang all the daggy stuff, there was nothing cool about being in the school choir except for voice training. Clearly, Chet Faker and Vance Joy went on to use their talents, and I did not.”
O’Brien spoke of his talented choir pals, “I knew Nick really enjoyed his singing a lot. He was very musical” he said, “But James was the school captain, and a football player in the firsts. You never knew he had this hidden talent, except he went to choir on a Wednesday afternoon.”
Of course, both artists have grown into two of Australia’s biggest musical exports right now, with Vance Joy set to support Taylor Swift on her epic international tour, whilst Faker smashed it in 2014, taking the #1 title for Triple J’s Hottest 100 for ‘Talk Is Cheap’ as well as critical acclaim for his debut record, Built On Glass.
That’s not to say that DJ Generik isn’t enjoying his fair share of success, having toured with the likes of mainstream dance titan Calvin Harris whom he has a close relationship with. “I give him demos and he gives me advice, he’s a super genuine bloke who wants to help. We also like sending each other stupid internet memes.”
