A recording made during a Toronto press conference in 1966 where John Lennon discusses his infamous declaration that the The Beatles were ‘more popular than Jesus’ is up for sale. The 14 minute reel-to-reel tape recording of the August 17, 1966 press conference by the Fab Four at the King Edward Hotel in Toronto is the only known audio record of the event. According to Los Angeles auction house Bonhams & Butterfields, the tape had sat in a draw for 40 years, forgotten by the young photojournalist and Beatles fan who made the recording. The tape has Lennon and Paul McCartney joking about how long the band would stick together, saying “We’re obviously not gonna go around holding hands forever,” Lennon joshes. McCartney adds “…it would be a bit, you know, embarrassing at [age] 35…” The tape is expected to fetch between $US20-25,000.
