Phoenix fans were treated to a special guest at the group’s Los Angeles show on Friday night, when alt-rock legend Beck came out to perform a couple of his own classics.

Last year saw French rockers Phoenix release their sixth album, Ti Amo. Since then, the band have been hard at work, touring around the world to give their dedicated fans a taste of the slick synth-pop tunes.

Currently, the band are stationed over in California, where they’re taking part in a five-night residency at Los Angeles’ Fonda Theatre. Of course, at such an iconic venue, it would make sense that a special guest might decide to pop in randomly.

Yes, during Saturday night’s performance, Phoenix had just wrapped up a couple of songs in their encore set when they welcomed enigmatic alt-rock icon Beck to the stage.

As Pitchfork notes, the performance came just as the band were playing through their track ‘Lovelife’.

“Every night we play in L.A. has to be special,” explained vocalist Thomas Mars. “I think there’s almost one L.A. reference in every single song that we have.”

“So this is one of your anthems,” he explained, before jumping into a heartfelt rendition of Beck’s 2002 classic ‘Lost Cause’. Soon, excited cheers filled the venue before Beck himself appeared onstage to take over on vocals.

As the cheers of the surprise Beck appearance soon simmered down as the song drew to a close, the alt-rock icon then surprised fans by launching into a rendition of 1996 track ‘Jack-Ass’, which was met with a similar positive response.

While both Beck and Phoenix toured Australia earlier this year, there’s no saying whether or not we’ll be lucky enough to witness such a pairing in the future, but we can only hope.
