2018 was a huge year for Melbourne electro-pop duo Bell City Square. The band unleashed their stunning debut singles ‘Make Me Feel Nothing’ and ‘Sixteen’, cementing themselves as the ones to watch in Australian pop. They cut their teeth on the BIGSOUND stage and scored an appearance at Falls, Lorne.
Now they’re back and more confident than ever. The band’s latest single, ‘Regular Fighter’ is nothing short of a triumph. The choppy, house-driven beat intertwined with dirty guitars culminates in their most glorious chorus yet. Bell City Square are leading the charge in a new wave of experimental pop in Australia. It’s huge.
Lyrically, the track delves into the neurosis that are part in parcel with burgeoning adulthood. Vocalist and producer Sam Weaver has explained, “The everyday heroism we face regularly, The constant fight within us as we contend with identity, the modern world and a seemingly perpetual anxiety”.
‘Regular Fighter’ is an ode to Bell City Square’s fixation with DIY ethos. The band self-produced engineered and mixed the song in a spare room turned studio. Guitarist and producer Jack Weaver has described this process as being “Vital in achieving the most authentic sound, atmosphere and feeling we possibly can in portrayal of the two of us”.
With a release this impressive, it’s clear that it’s only up from here for Bell City Square.
