Norman Cook, better known as Fatboy Slim, has released numerous studio albums over the years and played endless gigs around the world.
Having recently visited Australia as part of the Future Music Festival, he has kept himself pretty busy this year and now to top it off he’s released a live LP titled Big Beach Bootique 5.
From the moment the album starts, the sense of grandness comes about with spoken lyrics being read over the background music of “Right Here Right Now” which proves to be an exciting introduction.
Eventually leading into “Praise You”, it soon becomes apparent that the songs we know and love aren’t going to last long as after 39 seconds of the mega hit, it yet again is disrupted by the following track “Clubs”.
For the rest of the album, not one song gets played in full, however there is a large bevy of hits getting mashed up with other songs creating what seems like a massive never-ending dance number.
At times it does become a bit monotonous seeming like the one song has been playing non-stop, but the occasional familiar hits make their way into the mix and manage to re-energize the whole performance.
As the tracks cut from one to the other, one thing that must be said is that the mixing is perfectly timed and brilliant.
The repetitive lyrics and effects don’t exactly make this album a masterpiece but the giant mash-up of dance music does result in a fun record to chuck on in the background of a party.
