In a judgement that Tone Deaf reported on last week, today the Federal Court found in favour of ISP iinet in a  case launched by a coalition of film and TV companies in Australia – including Village Roadshow, Universal Pictures, Warner Bros Entertainment, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation, Disney Enterprises, Inc. and the Seven Network.

Justice Dennis Cowdrey ruled that iinet did not facilitate copyright infringement.

This case has been watched eagerly right around the world and now has massive repercussions for the dissemination of information and copyright globally,

Justice Cowdrey said:

“iiNet is not responsible if an iiNet user uses that system to bring about copyright infringement … the law recognises no positive obligation on any person to protect the copyright of another,”

More to come
