As we all know, tomorrow is Australia Day and you’re probably stoked to be getting the day off and can’t wait to throw some snags on the barbecue, crack open an ice-cold tinnie, and sit back listening to the Hottest 100.
But while to many of us Australia Day is little more than an excuse to have a pool party, to many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island peoples, the First Fleet’s arrival at Botany Bay in 1788 is not an occasion to be celebrated.
As we’ve previously noted, many Indigenous Australians refer to Australia Day as Invasion Day, seeing it as the day that marks the invasion of their homeland and the beginning of the genocide of Australia’s Indigenous peoples.
