It’s hard to talk about the Australian music landscape and not have triple j come up in the conversation at some point. So influential has our national youth broadcaster become that it’s almost impossible to imagine a world without it.

All year triple j has comprehensively smashed commercial radio in ratings surveys, with the public voting with their dials that they want to hear more local music from credible music taste-makers – and we haven’t even mentioned the ads yet.

Yes, in a world where Courtney Barnett and Tame Impala have dominated not just at home but around the world, it seems remarkable that commercial radio haven’t adjusted as Australians musical tastes have.

Still, commercial radio’s ambivalence and disdain towards Australian music is their own folly, and triple j has been more than happy to pick up the slack which has resulted in their biggest and most successful year to date.

“We’re really excited to be part of more young Australians’ lives than ever before,” says Ollie Wards, triple j Content Director. “There’s no one else in Australia doing what we do and we’re stoked to see how many people are engaging with us as a result.”

“We’re always innovating and constantly connecting a community around the country, on whatever platform they’re on, whether it’s radio, mobile, TV, online or social media. We recommend the best new music every day, proudly playing 50% local artists, but we’re also giving a voice to young Australia and sharing important stories that need to be told.”

So just how successful has Triple J been? Let us break it down for you by the numbers.

1.953 Million Listeners To Triple J Every Week

In 2015, triple j’s average weekly listenership in the 5 mainland capital cities alone was 1.953 million, and beyond that, triple j covers 98% of Australia with many more people listening in regional areas that are not surveyed.

In triple j’s core demographic of 18-24 year olds, the station is in the top 3 of those capital cities and 1st in Sydney and Perth, with both triple j’s Breakfast and Drive programs growing in numbers listening around the country amidst a turbulent period for Australian radio.

1.7 Million Fans On Social Media

triple j has over 1.7 million fans on social media – more than any other Australian radio station – as well as being the number one radio station on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter and triple j’s ‘Hit List’ being the most listened to partner playlist on Spotify Australia.

Adding to that, triple j also made history this year as the first radio station to partner with Beats 1 on Apple Music, to present a radio show showcasing Australian music to a new international audience.

2 Million Votes In The Hottest 100

The Hottest 100 broke all previous records, with over 2 million votes cast in the publicly voted poll. Even better is that 59 Australian tracks made it into the Hottest 100, the highest number ever in countdown history.

With 2,099,707 votes submitted, the 2014 Triple J Hottest 100 represented 188 countries and boasted 3,829 registered parties in a staggering 80 countries, including parts of sub-Saharan Africa, South America, and Russia.

With such a strong start to the year, triple j reached over 2 million people in the first radio survey of 2015.

Like A Version Goes #1, Has 13 Million Views

Like A Version continues to be one of the most popular segments on the station, as every week listeners tune in on Friday mornings to hear fresh new takes on some of their favourite songs by some of their favourite artists.

But the huge popularity isn’t restricted just to the airwaves.
