Acclaimed indie singer-songwriter Cat Power is set to return to Aussie shores next year, announcing a series of 2019 tour dates earlier today.

Earlier this year, Australian music fans were treated to a very special one-off show when Chan Marshall (aka Cat Power) headed to Sydney for this year’s Vivid LIVE festivities.

Performing 1998’s Moon Pix (which she recorded in Melbourne with members of the Dirty Three), fans were left hoping that this iconic muso would be visiting elsewhere in the country. Now, their prayers have been answered.

Announced today, just a few days before the release of her first record in six years, Wanderer, Cat Power has booked in a three-date tour for early next year.

Kicking off in Melbourne on February 9th, Cat Power’s Aussie tour sees her confirmed as the first act for the 2019 Zoo Twilight Series. While no other acts have been announced for this series yet, the full lineup is set to drop on October 24th.

But it’s not just Melbourne being treated to these shows, with Sydney and Brisbane dates following in the days after her Zoo Twilight appearance.

Incidentally, Cat Power recently opened up about her upcoming record, noting that her previous record label rejected it because it didn’t sound commercial enough.

“They said, do it again, do it over,” she explained, noting she’d received a similar demand during the production of 2012’s Sun. “It was like, ‘We need hits!’” she said. “And I did it — I got Top 10. I did the best I could to give them hits.”

“Looking back, I know they were using me,” she said, noting her label urged her to shift her sound in a poppier direction. “I understood that I was a product,” she continued, “and I always thought I was a person.”

Cat Power also recalled the time when an executive from the label played her an Adele album, telling her that’s how an album is supposed to sound.

Tickets to Cat Power’s Sydney and Brisbane shows go on sale next Monday, with her Melbourne gig on sale from October 30th.
