Earlier this week punk rocker icon Marky Ramone unveiled quite possibly the greatest invention to help live music fans deal with “assholes with smartphones at concerts“, and after a recent interview today, it seems the legendary drummer isn’t the only one who’s got a problem with people using their phones at gigs.
The Hottest 100’s most recent golden boy, Nick Murphy aka Chet Faker, has spoken-out against punters who choose to take zillions of photos and videos at his gig, a behaviour he’s never been too flash on, as Musicfeeds point out.
Speaking with breakfast show hosts Matt and Alex on a segment titled “Chet the facts”, Murphy gave his two-cents on why people choose to film gigs on their phones, “Some people who may have gone to my early shows would’ve seen me get kind of angry, I didn’t deal with it well at the start. I was like, ‘What are you doing? Put your phone away.’”

“But then I realised for a lot of people that’s the only way they know how to experience a show, because – I’ve thought about this – when you go to your first show, everyone feels a bit awkward, you know? Like, ‘What do I do?’. A lot of people have a drink in the hand or whatever” he opines.
“But I get it now. When people go to shows and they’ll feel a bit awkward, you’ll just pull your phone out, so you don’t have to sit with that awkwardness.”
Continuing, he voiced concerns of those choosing to film, “what happens is by doing that you miss out on what other people learn, which is when you stay with that awkwardness, it goes away and then you start to move around and to feel comfortable, and that’s where you find what’s so amazing about live shows, that connection, that live thing.”

Murphy also addressed the question of whether any of the photos and videos taken of him mid-performance are of any reputable quality, “There are thousands of recordings, to assume that your handheld, wavy, blurred, distorted audio will be the best, that’s a tall order.”
Chet Faker is currently on his mega national tour, which includes five, count it five shows in Melbourne alone, and y’all in attendance should maybe think twice before you whip that phone out to film the bearded crooner, as he rightfully points out – you’re missing out.
