1,2,3,4.. I’ve got sumpin’ new for ya!

90s rap superstar Coolio is hitting Aussie shores this year for a headlining tour.

Coolio began rapping from a young age and performed in many local Los Angeles rap contests as a youth. After making connections in the Los Angeles rap scene, he ended up joining the group WC and the Maad Circle in 1991.

Their debut album was regionally successful but didn’t make much impact on a national scale. Three years later, Coolio signed to Tommy Boy Records and released his debut solo album, It Takes A Thief. This album contained the hit single and Coolio’s breakout song ‘Fantastic Voyage’. It peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it one of the biggest rap singles of the year.

In 1995, ‘Gangsta’s Paradise’ became the official anthem for the blockbuster movie Dangerous Minds. It instantly hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and was the #1 single of 1995 for all genres. It’s global reach swept the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Austria, Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, Australia, and New Zealand. The album Gangsta’s Paradise was released in 1995 and was certified 2X Platinum by the RIAA. Along with Gangsta’s Paradise, the album also contained the major hits in “1, 2, 3, 4 (Sumpin’ New)” and “Too Hot”. Soon after, Coolio released My Soul containing the hit C U When U Get There.

Over the next decade, Coolio released four more albums, “Coolio.com” (2001), “El Cool Magnifico” (2002), “Return of the Gangsta” (2006), and “Steal Hear” (2008) and appeared in numerous films and television appearances. In 2008, Coolio hosted an online cooking show, Cookin’ with Coolio for the network My Damn Channel. A companion cookbook called Cookin’ with Coolio: 5 Star Meals at a 1 Star Price was released on November 17, 2009 to critical acclaim.

Now the rapper will be returning to Australia after his appearance at the 2012/2013 Falls Festival.
