Taka Honda, best known as the ever-smiling drummer for the now defunct Little Red, has certainly taken a different direction, adopting frontman (and at times cross-dressing) duties for The Hondas.
Following on from the highly divisive release of “I Am A Homosexual” last year, their latest is raw and quintessential garage rock, but is altogether a brief affair, with just two songs clocking in at just under two minutes each.
Taken at face value, which it definitely should be, it is a fun and catchy release; abound in enthusiasm that makes for an easy and enjoyable, albeit quick, listen.
Honda definitely seems comfortable with the shift from behind the drums, gleefully growling and screaming in ‘Cop Song’, the upbeat single that will most likely be stuck in your head for days to come.
The accompanying track, ‘Feel Gay’, follows the trend set by ‘Cop Song’, a catchy, enjoyable song that, while lacking in substance, definitely makes up for it in vitality
The lyrics perhaps shouldn’t be read into all that deeply, and almost seems like this was done intentionally. With lines like ‘don’t stop when you’re running from the cops’, they provide an infectious hook but probably not all that sound advice.
A brief, and most likely another divisive release from The Hondas, but its eagerness and playful nature are hard to deny. Taka Honda can almost be heard beaming throughout the release, and as he joyfully exclaims ‘I feel so gay/ like Christmas Day’, and it’s hard not to smile along with him.
