Every week there’s a bunch of music-related stories, links, videos and other internet goodies that are a little on the trashy side, but for whatever reason get everyone in the office talking.
This is what the Tone Deaf Trash Can is all about: it’s our avenue for sharing the funniest, weirdest and downright tackiest music stories of the week to help you keep up to date with the best (and worst) things happening in pop culture. Don’t feel guilty – you’re allowed to enjoy it.
Girls Star Zosia Mamet’s Leaked Pre-Fame Rap Video Is The Most Cringeworthy Thing You’ll See This Week
Onscreen she’s known as Girls’ loveably neurotic Shoshanna, but IRL Zosia Mamet is actually more of a Marnie—a struggling musician suffering from a mid-life identity crisis.
Last year the 26-year-old made headlines after she started a Kickstarter campaign asking for donations for her folk band, the Cabin Sisters. It failed miserably and only made $2,783 of the $32,000 it was asking for.
Now it’s been revealed that before Mamet was a failed folk musician, she was a failed rapper. And no, this isn’t a script for an upcoming episode from Season 4.
The sombre and apparently v serious ~rap video~ sees Zosia and a friend spitting to camera around various #gritty New York landscapes, wearing tough leather jackets in an attempt to look like a pair of tough emojis. It feels like a parody, though sadly it’s not.
This is really hard to watch.
… Followed Closely By Rita Ora’s Humiliating Twitter Fuck Up
Name usually followed by “Who?” when/if they ever come up in conversation, Rita Ora, committed heinous faux pas by grossly overestimating the strength of her fame – the origins of which, to this day, remain a bigger mystery than the rocks at Stonehenge.
As Buzzfeed reports, earlier this week Ora tweeted she would drop her new single if her she got 100,000 retweets.
However, in a not-so shocking plot twist, the tweet mirrored her entire career and flopped spectacularly, only managing to pull in 2,000 retweets.
Realising their marketing ploy had blown up in their face, Rita and her team deleted the tweet but not before people could command-shift-4 it.
Meanwhile, other reports show screenshots of the singer retweeting a fan who said, “where her 3.9m followers at when you need them smh”. Of course, this was deleted too.
Then it got even more embarrassing when the singer’s PR team scrambled to wipe the egg from her face and came up with the oh-so predictable I was hacked! defence.
By the way my Twitter got hacked somebody is threatening to release new music I’ve worked really hard on. Nothing comes out until I’m ready.

Or the bots insist on it! When it’s ready we will drop music! Luckily I caught the hacker really quickly and deleted the post. Thank you!!

@RitaOra lol we all know you are just mad you didn’t get 100,000 RT’s Cmon girl!!! — BritneySpears (@DieWithoutBrit) October 31, 2014
@RitaOra loooooool ok sure — moll (@cxnderella) October 31, 2014
If Rita Ora releases new music and no-one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?
This News Anchor Might Be The Closest Thing We Have To Ron Burgundy
Meet Dan Thorn, 2014’s latest viral news anchor who shot to internet fame after getting turnt on live TV to T.I.’s ‘Where They At Doe?’ and Taylor Swift’s ‘Shake It Off’, naturally.
With dance moves that can only be described as white and a smug expression that you probably wear when you’re drunk dancing to Drake on a Saturday night, Dan might be the first presenter to ever bring trap arms to the daily news broadcast. For that, he is a hero. A man of the people.
Stay classy, Dan Thorn.
Billy Corgan Cops Heat From Anderson Cooper Over That Cat Cover
Remember that time Billy Corgan was the cover star of PAWS Chicago Magazine? It happened a while ago, and while we never really got over its beauty, American silver fox Anderson Cooper seemingly only caught wind. And he wasn’t impressed.
In a segment on his show Anderson Cooper 360, the acclaimed journalist had a bone to pick with “cool” rockstars from the late ’90s becoming “uncool” with age.
After slagging off Siamese Dream as “a bit derivative of My Bloody Valentine” – who knew he had so many opinions about alternative rock? – Anderson launched off with the following rant:
“So perhaps Billy Corgan is I don’t know, off his alternative rocker, but I think maybe there’s more to this. Maybe he’s being ironic, or maybe when the cool rock stars start doing less rock starry things, it kind of makes us face our own mortality. See I want R.E.M. to stay just the way I know and love them, I don’t want ‘Everybody Hurts’ to suddenly be used in an Excedrin commercial. I don’t ever want to see a product called Eddie Vedder’s Prune Jam. I want to see neither Stephen Malkmus nor Thom Yorke on the cover of AARP Magazine.”
The Smashing Pumpkins frontman didn’t take too kindly to Anderson’s words, responding with the following on Twitter:
@andersoncooper Sorry to disappoint, but when I’m not raising cain for a great organization like @PAWSchicago, I’m still making REAL music — Billy Corgan (@Billy) October 31, 2014
@andersoncooper I realize you’re too busy being a globalist shill to know the difference, but there are those of us who do as we like — Billy Corgan (@Billy) October 31, 2014
While Billy has taken up a couple of weird hobbies lately – like launching his own wrestling reality TV show or starring in furniture commercials – the man is still making music, with The Pumpkins’ upcoming album Monuments to an Elegy due for release on December 9.
Also, only Billy Corgan could get away with using the insult “globalist shill” in a Twitter beef. Never change.
Iggy Azalea Won Halloween With This Excellent Response To The Haters
Iggy Azalea might not be as popular in the Tone Deaf office as, say, Taylor Swift or Nicki Minaj, but you have to give the girl props when they’re due. Her Halloween costume killed it.
Giving a cheeky self-aware nod to the ongoing White Girls memes that have haunted her since day 1 but hit their peak a couple weeks ago when Snoop used them as ammo in their public beef, Iggy’s getup showed she gives little fucks about the haters and that she can have a good ol’ laugh at herself.
For that, I’m chuckin Iggy a fresh Trash Can Tinnie. Not bad, Amethyst.
