Danielle Haim has revealed that she once slid into the DMs of Bono to ask him to feature on one of Haim’s songs.
Sliding into someone’s DMs, what a relatable story to the masses. OK, we might not all be doing it to someone as famous as the sunglass-wearing, charity-adoring singer from U2, but still.
As per Uproxx, one third of Haim, Danielle, only had eyes for Bono when it came to thinking of possible guests for her band’s third studio album, Women in Music Pt. III.
Understandably nervous about reaching out to such a legend, Danielle did the obvious thing in such a situation: she got hella drunk before texting.
Haim and their collaborator Rostam Batmanglij (once of Vampire Weekend) recently sat down to discuss the recording process for the album on the podcast Song Exploder.
While speaking about the track ‘Summer Girl’, Rostam recalled wanting to get Bono to contribute vocals. After ad-libbing a possible verse during a brainstorming session, Rostam knew that it was befitting of the U2 man.
“In my head, I was like: ‘That’s such a Bono line, I can just picture Bono…Maybe we should ask him if he would sing that section of the song?’ And Danielle was kind of like, ‘Well you know I know him. When I lost my voice in Ireland, he sent me this care package, it was the sweetest thing. He recommended a doctor.” Rostam explained.

Danielle then took over to bring the story home: “So I have his number. Rostam’s like, ‘You gotta text Bono.’ I was like, ‘What the f*ck are you talking about? You want me to text Bono?’ I think we got super drunk and he finally convinced me, ‘Just send it!’
So, I sent Bono the song. He was so nice. He was like, ‘This is great. Let me see where I fit in.’ My mind was exploding. Finally, he texted me back and was like, ‘You know, I’m so sick. I’m so sorry. If you want a blow horn on this song — my voice is so shot. I don’t think I can come up with anything in time.’ And that was that.”
And with that went one of the great what-if’s of modern rock collaborations. Helping out Haim probably would have went a little way to making people forget all about that whole Apple-sending-literally-everyone-the-U2-album-without-permission debacle. Alas.
