Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine has revealed that he had an astronomical amount of riffs at the ready for the forthcoming Megadeth record. In an interview with uDiscover Music, Mustaine claimed that he had a library of 500 riffs to choose from.

In the interview, Mustaine has detailed his recording process and how he fleshes his juicy riffs into fully-fledged Megadeth hits. “You can go through there and handpick the best of the best. And it’s not like I have to struggle to come up with something really good. It’s there — I just have to pick it. And I’m so excited about doing that and getting something out into the listeners’ hands.”

Back in November, it was revealed the Megadeth had begun the recording process of their sixteenth studio album. This forthcoming record will be the first full-length release we’ve heard from the thrash-metal giants since 2016’s Dystopia. Mustaine shared that the band were aiming to release the new album in April of this year. He has confirmed that fans will “absolutely” hear at least one new track in 2019.

Whilst details about the forthcoming record have been kept under wraps, Mustaine has shared that he never believed that they’d make music this “aggressive” again.

“We’ve been putting new music up in my Dropbox. And the stuff that Dirk’s been playing along to it is scary. We’ve never had any of those blast-beat kind of things in our music before… Some of the drumming on this is mind-blowing. It’s making me a better guitar player again, which I love. But I never thought we were gonna be playing this fast or this aggressive again.”

Dystopian was Megadeth’s best charting record in years, it also earned the band a Grammy. Suffice to say, we can’t wait to hear what these riff-lords have in store for us.
