January 10th marks five years since the death of music’s greatest pop chameleon, David Bowie. Ahead of the anniversary of his death Bowie’s widow, model Iman, has shared a heartfelt musing of their love.

In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar UK Iman has reflected on her “true love” and his musical legacy.

“David is in our hearts and minds on a daily basis, for all of us,” she said. “You know, this was my true love. My daughter once asked me if I would ever marry again and I said, ‘never’.”

Iman detailed that the anniversary of Bowie’s death is the “saddest time,” though she finds solace in the knowledge that he is “hiding in plain sight. His fans are still around. His music is still relevant.”

On the love they shared, Iman mused “It was a really everyday marriage.”

She continued, “He was a very funny, warm gentleman – you know, everyone talks about him being futuristic, but no, he was not, he liked more than anything to wear a three-piece suit.

“It was a beautiful, ordinary life and that was what was great about it. We could live in New York, pick up our daughter from school, walk everywhere… You know, I wish we had had more years.”

Iman continued to detail an extramundane story that took place on the anniversary of his death last year. She was walking alone by herself in the redwoods in San Francisco and, “I went on a hike and a bluebird flew in front of me. A bluebird, above all things!”

For those who are feeling a little lost by the significance of this story Bowie’s swan song, ‘Lazarus’, features the lyrics “You know, I’ll be free / Just like that bluebird / Now, ain’t that just like me? / Oh, I’ll be free / Just like that bluebird.”

On January 8th and January 10th, a filmed London production of the David Bowie musical Lazarus will stream for three performances this weekend in commemoration of the icon’s birthday and the anniversary of his death. Ticket information is here.)
