On Sunday evening, legendary auteur David Lynch won his first-ever Oscar. The filmmaker received the Academy Honorary Award at the Governors Awards alongside fellow artists Geena Davis, Wes Studi, and Lina Wertmüller.
In the most perfectly chaotic David Lynch way, he delivered a twenty-word acceptance speech. “To the Academy and everyone who helped me along the way, thanks,” he shared. “You have a very nice face. Goodnight.”
The face Lynch was congratulating remains a point of mystery but as THR suggests, he may have been complimenting the chiselled mug of the award. Never change, David, never change.
The award ceremony was one big, beautiful, Blue Velvet reunion. Lynch was honoured with the award by the film’s stars Kyle MacLachlan, Isabella Rossellini, and Laura Dern.
“He says ideas are like fish. If you want to catch little fish, you can stay in the shallow water,” shared Dern when presenting the award. “But if you want to catch the big fish, you’ve gotta go deeper. Down deep, the fish are more powerful and more pure, they’re huge and abstract, and very beautiful.”
