He’s often considered one of the coolest musicians to have ever lived, but in addition to his status as one of the trailblazers of the country music genre, Johnny Cash’s music has had an unparalleled influence on both rock and pop music since his first record. Now, as we get ever-closer to 15 years since the music legend’s passing, a new documentary is set to shine a light on the story behind one of his greatest records.
Despite having been the focus of countless documentaries in the past, and the subject of at least one Joaquin Phoenix-starring film, Johnny Cash is set to once again be the focus of filmmakers, as his landmark performance at Folsom Prison is set to be honoured, just days after the 50th anniversary of the event.
As the Hollywood Reporter notes, award-winning filmmaker Thom Zimny is set to explore Cash’s life and legacy through this classic gig Zimny, who has previously helmed a number of Bruce Springsteen documentaries in addition to the upcoming film Elvis Presley: The Searcher, is set to team up with producer Frank Marshall (Jurassic World) for the ambitious work.
“While the linear narrative of the Folsom Prison performances will anchor our film,” states Zimny. “Each song in the set list will open a door into a nonlinear presentation of Cash’s emotional, musical and personal development.”
A live album commemorating Johnny Cash’s famous concert was released in May of 1968 and has since gone on to sell over three million copies in the United States alone. The album has since gained fame for not only being one of the greatest live albums ever recorded, but for also serving as a gateway for music fans to get into the country music genre.
While a release date has not yet been announced for the new doco, you can be sure this is going to be a pretty special event.
