Dropkick Murphys will perform on the baseball diamond at Boston’s legendary Fenway Park later this month.

Fenway Park. It’s a name baseball fans will instantly recognise. The home of the Boston Red Sox holds enormous sentimental weight for Bostonians. This makes it the perfect location for a fully electric live-streamed gig from one of the city’s preeminent punk bands.

Streaming Outta Fenway will take place on Friday, May 29. “The lights will be on at the Old Ballpark for Streaming Outta Fenway,” the Dropkick Murphys wrote on social media. All members of the Celtic punk band will be on hand to perform in front of an empty stadium. Access to the stream is free.

The event is special for a few reasons. “We are gonna be the first band in HISTORY to play right on the dirt and grass of the infield diamond,” say the Murphys. They’re also claiming this will be the first time a band “has ever played a full show in an empty sports stadium.”

And to raise the stakes even higher, Bruce Springsteen will join them for a “special double play.” That’s a baseball metaphor, but what does it denote? The Boss will appear remotely to play one Dropkick Murphys song and one of his own with the band. Something tells me it’ll be ‘Glory Days’, which begins “I had a friend, was a big baseball player…”

Dropkick Murphys present Streaming Outta Fenway

This isn’t the Murphys’ first stab at a socially distanced live stream event. Back in March, just as lockdowns took hold, they staged an online gig for St. Patrick’s Day. Boston tech company Pegasystems helped pull it off, and they’ll be handling production of the Fenway Park show too.

The event will also be raising funds for three charities: the Boston Resiliency FundHabitat for Humanity Greater Boston and Feeding America. And given it’s a globally-streamed event, the band have helpfully noted what time it’ll be in Sydney when they hit stage. So pencil in 8am Saturday, May 30 to your diaries. You’ll be able to find the concert on the band’s Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Twitch pages.
