Who knew book signings and Q&A sessions could be do exciting? Spruiking his new book “It’s So Easy: and other lies” (Tone Deaf Ed: which rock star isn’t writing a book at the moment?), former Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan has had a verbal altercation with a man claiming to be a reporter who accuses McKagan of lying at a Q&A session at Seattle University.
The reporter took exception to McKagan’s claims about his encounter with Kurt Cobain just days before the Nirvana frontman took his own life. McKagan often speaks about his time with Cobain when they happened to be on the same flight from Los Angeles.
In a column for the Seattle Weekly he recently wrote “I was on the same plane as Kurt on that flight up from Los Angeles a couple of days before his death. We were both f—ed-up. We talked, but not in depth. I was in my hell, and he in his, and this we both seemed to understand. When we arrived in Seattle and went to baggage claim, the thought crossed my mind to invite him over to my house then and there. I had a real sense that he was lonely and alone that night. I felt the same way. There was a mad rush of people there in public…I lost my train of thought for a minute, and Kurt said good-bye and left to his waiting town car…I received a call from my manager two days later that Kurt had died.”
The reporter, Richard Lee, became irate at McKagan insinuating that the encounter is nothing but a work of fiction dreamed up by the bassist. Some in the audience try to move Lee along but he seems unwilling to go without a fight. Eventually McKagan has had enough and jumps up from his seat on stage and yells in the face of the man “Get the f— out of here motherf—er!”
