Up-and-coming singer-songwriter Dylan Cartlidge is one to watch. The North Yorkshire artist has crafted his own unique blend of pop-infused-soul and gritty hip hop.

Cartlidge has been dipping his toes in the music world since the tender age of 16. Cutting his teeth around the Yorkshire live scene as frontman of a local band named Bi:Lingual, before pursuing his ambition as a solo artist. He even featured on the BBC’s documentary The Mighty Redcar, a series that aimed to illuminate young people from the town of Redcar doing everything they can to fulfil their dreams.

Dylan Cartlidge has just released his latest single, the introspective and glorious ‘Yellow Brick Road’. It’s another brilliant offering from the musical maverick.

“This song to me is about the juxtaposition of dreams & expectations. It’s about how fear and self-sabotage can dump the weight of the world on your shoulders in your most hard-earned moments. But it’s also about how overcoming all of this can be as simple as putting one foot in front of the other and stepping into the unknown,” explains Cartlidge of the track.

To celebrate the release of ‘Yellow Brick Road’, Dylan was so kind as to send us through a selection of a few of his favourite Australian artists. It’s an eclectic bunch. Pop on the track below and check out the antipode artists that are inspiring this Yorkshire gun.

DZ Deathrays
I’ve always loved jams that come out of Australia. It seems to be just the coolest place, full of inspiration and cool vibes. I’ve been the biggest DZs fan since ‘Gina Works At Hearts’. I got to meet them and actually support them in a band I used to be in back in the day and they are just the chillest guys.

L-Fresh The Lion
I actually dug into triple J unearthed to find this back in the day and it just caught me off-guard. It’s a super cool vibe and he’s a mega rapper plus the fact that he was throwing his jams on Triple J Unearthed seemed like the coolest thing.

Wolfmother
Until I was like twenty-one I was very closed minded and I HATED anything that had live instruments as I thought it was for “moshers” not rappers. I ended up starting a rock-rap band (the one I supported DZs with) and they turned on to Love Train by Wolf Mother. What. A. Jam. We’d actually accidentally totally ripped it off in a song we made, but god im glad we did.

Pond
I wanted to say something cool about this song and how I didn’t find out about Pond & Tame Impala through smoking weed for the first time in university underneath “went to India once”-style decor and elephant tapestries….but unfortunately I really am that lame.
