DZ Deathrays have just surprised their fans with a brand new single, releasing the most ambitious crossover of 2019, ‘Front Row Hustle’.
DZ Deathrays have undoubtedly had one stellar year in 2018. Releasing their third album, Bloody Lovely, at the start of the year, the group copped an ARIA nomination for the record, and even hit #47 in triple j’s Hottest 100 with ‘Like People’.
Now, the band have returned with their latest single, and it’s an explosive collaboration that we didn’t see coming.
Titled ‘Front Row Hustle’, the track sees some Aussie hip-hop legends featuring, including A.B. Original’s Briggs and Trials, and rising star Jesswar.
A rework of Bloody Lovely’s ‘Afterglow’, ‘Front Row Hustle’ sees Trials taking on production duties to turn the original from an alt-rock classic into an absolute banger.
“I kept all the grunt from the guitars and went to work with some 808’s, synths and a couple of crusty drum breaks,” Trials explained. “Add the 1/2 KO combo of Briggs + Jesswar to the mix and now I look like I been chewing on lemons all day.“

“It was such a pleasant surprise when we asked Trials to remix ‘Afterglow’ and he came back with this beast of a tune,” noted DZ Deathrays’ Shane Parsons. “Adding Jesswar and Briggs to the track turned it into its own thing and I think everyone was really stoked with how it all came out.”
“Simon and I have been writing songs here and there that kinda fit into the hip hop world but this one just took it to a new level.”
Likewise, Jesswar explained that working on the track was an exciting experience, having been a fan of DZ Deathrays for quite a few years now.
“I really enjoyed mixing elements of hip-hop with rock and having to change gears,” Jesswar. “The video shoot was especially dope, to be on set with Briggs, Trials and DZ, all together watching it come to life was an incredible experience!”
The release of ‘Front Row Hustle’ today also happens to coincide with DZ Deathrays’ Tour With The Lot, which sees the group hitting up venues all over the country. Supported by Moaning Lisa & Good Doogs on select dates, these shows will keep the group busy until the middle of April.
