From the ‘only in America’ and ‘just plain creepy’ Departments comes the news that tools used to conduct Elvis’ post mortem examination in 1977 were put up for auction – and then removed after questions were raised about the implement’s authenticity. Rubber gloves, forceps and aneurysm hooks which were supposedly used in the examination of Elvis’ body were among the items going to auction.
A spokesperson for the auction firm conducting this particularly grisly sale, Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, explained that a senior embalmer at the Memphis Funeral Home put the tools aside after Presley’s 1977 funeral. “The mortician, who prepared the body, retained this tag and the instruments, along with the preparation room case report, the case sheet, dry cleaning tags, the hanger to the singer’s suit and tie, and the coffin shipping invoice, which are marked ‘Elvis Presley,'” Mary Williams told the media.
However, another employee of the funeral home has now claimed that the items were sterilised after the autopsy and used again, which would lower their value.
