The Godfrey Turner Overdrive boys had a busy 2013. The five-piece from Orange, NSW released their second EP within just six months of unleashing their debut TV in July 2013. It’s hard to believe that, in such a short space of time, a group can mature so much in a musical sense.
The band’s rough, grimy vibe hasn’t been lost – in fact, this record displays a new found depth to their sound. Incorporating an undulating flow of hard-hitting riffs with ambient guitar melodies during the refreshingly simple verses makes EP2 a stimulating listen.
The vocals are not as clean or polished as they could be, but at such an early stage in the band’s career, the setting makes for a fantastic foundation that’s based on the classic raw rock energy that has gently fondled with so many rock lovers’ hearts over the years.
The second and third tracks on the release, ‘Good Time Orphans’ and ‘Nothing For You’, are the perfect examples of the group’s newly discovered rhythm, with the verses containing deep valleys of pure tension before exploding into headbanging choruses. It’s very fitting that the record concludes with the fast paced Frenzal Rhomb-esque track ‘GTO Are GO’, because this group is most definitely on the move.
If the small timeframe between their first two releases is anything to go by, it won’t be long before fans get even more Godfrey Turner Overdrive into their earholes. These guys are definitely on the right track.
