Former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted has shot down rumours he is set to replace disgraced ex-Megadeth member David Ellefson.

ICYMI, Ellefson was fired from Megadeth earlier this month amid allegations of sexual misconduct.

Ellefson has been accused of grooming a younger woman through messages and videos online, an allegation he has strenuously denied.

Now, attention has turned as to who will replace him as the band’s bassist, with Newsted appearing to be at the top of the list of potential candidates.

However, Newsted’s wife Nicole has taken to Instagram to clear up the rumours, as well as a few other misconceptions.

“Hi guys! Two things: 1. Jason is not joining Megadeth. Peace to them. Listen to metal,” Nicole wrote.

She continued, “2. Jason does not have social media accounts; this includes but is not limited to TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Onlyfans and Tinder. If you are receiving DMs from the Jason Newsted music account or any other account claiming to be Jason please know this is not Jason, and proceed at your own risk.”

If Newsted had indeed planned on joining the band, he would be teaming up with fellow former Metallica member and current Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine.

As reported by Consequence of Sound, Newsted and Mustaine were never in Metallica at the same time, as the latter was fired in 1983 for disruptive behaviour.

Meanwhile, Newsted was tasked with replacing the late Cliff Burton and ultimately held the role from 1986 until 2001.
