Canadian grunge duo Maya Miller and Becky Black are The Pack A.D., and together their blistering brand of rock has been winning over crowds across the span of seven years and five albums.
The Pack A.D. are back with their latest LP, Do Not Engage, and the pair have given Tone Deaf an exclusive preview stream before its official release on March 7.
Reuniting with Detroit producer Jim Diamond (White Stripes, Electric Six), they’ve carved out a collection of tracks “much better, much harder, much nastier and much more confident” that they no longer consider their first two albums as part of their back catalogue.
This is The Pack A.D. breaking the rules and bursting out with something new – and they’ve never sounded so confident.
According to Miller, Do Not Disturb is a product of pure intuition; no scripts or record label interventions, just the two women giving it their all.
“We never really consciously have a plan of action. If you call a plan of action ‘just get better,’ then that’s the plan we went with for this album,” the drummer explains.
Do Not Disturb sees The Pack A.D. exploring a sound that’s slightly more polished than the rest of their back catalogue, producing some of their most accessible tracks to date.
The pair were partly inspired by elements of alt-rock tracks they were hearing on the radio. As such, the women have embraced their pop sensibilities (think: handclap samples) whilst still managing to stay true to their sludgy, powerhouse roots. It sees their walls of crashing instrumentation a bit clearer and fine tuned, but still hitting with a bang.
Long established as one of Canada’s rock gems, this ferocious outfit have cranked more notches than ever before, and have made a record that might just push them onto the next level.
