Foo Fighters have marked the 30th anniversary of their self-titled debut album by releasing a powerful cover of Minor Threat’s “I Don’t Wanna Hear It”, breathing new life into the hardcore classic with vocals recorded in 2025 over instrumental tracks dating back to 1995.

The release, promoted under #FF30, showcases the band’s return to their punk rock roots and highlights Dave Grohl’s deep-seated connection to Washington DC’s hardcore scene. Before his rise to fame with Nirvana, Grohl’s musical journey included drumming for Scream, a hardcore outfit signed to Dischord Records – the label founded by Minor Threat’s Ian MacKaye.

The connection between Grohl and MacKaye spans decades, beginning with a fan letter Grohl wrote at age 14. Their enduring relationship was recently evidenced by their joint appearance at a Devo concert. Minor Threat’s original version of “I Don’t Wanna Hear It” first appeared on their self-titled EP in 1982.

Questions remain about whether the instrumental tracks were recorded by Grohl alone, similar to the approach taken on the Foo Fighters’ debut album, or if they feature the original full band lineup. The timing of this release coincides with significant changes within the band, including the recent departure of drummer Josh Freese, who had been performing with the group for two years following Taylor Hawkins’ passing.

The band have yet to announce who will take over drumming duties for their upcoming October tour through Indonesia, Singapore, and Japan. Speculation has naturally turned to Shane Hawkins potentially stepping into the role, though no official confirmation supports these rumours.

Shane has, however, assumed his father’s position in Taylor’s long-running side project, Chevy Metal. The new-look band with Shane at the drums will begin a brief tour on July 19th in Denver, Colorado, concluding on August 31st in Agoura Hills, California.

This schedule would theoretically allow Shane time to prepare for the Foo Fighters tour, though fans will likely have to wait until the band takes the stage in Jakarta on October 2nd to discover who has secured the drummer position.
