South Bronx rapper Fred the Godson has passed away due to coronavirus complications. He was 35 years old.

The rapper revealed that he had contracted the virus on April 6th, sharing a photo of himself attached to a ventilator on Twitter. “I’m in here with this Covid-19 shit! Please keep me in y’all prayers!!! #GodIsGreat”. The rapper’s wife revealed that Fred was making positive progress. “Now, instead of the ventilator supporting him 100 percent, it’s supporting him 70 percent,” she explained.

Tragically, he lost the battle with the virus on Thursday.

The musician made his breakthrough back in 2010 with his Armageddon mixtape. The tape featured collaborations with Busta Rhymes, Cam’ron, Waka Flocka Flame, Styles P, and others. In 2011, Fred was honoured on XXL’s 2011 Freshman Class, which also featured Kendrick Lamar, Mac Miller, Lil B, Meek Mill, Big K.R.I.T., and YG.

“I call that the all-star game,” Fred shared 2016 Breakfast Club interview. “You work through the year and you just keep going, and they just call you out for your individual accolades. The top 11 met up, and that was just crazy to me. That’s the biggest thing thus far to happen to Fred the Godson.”

Fred the Godson released two albums this year, Training Day — with SNL graduate Jay Pharoah, and Payback.
