We’ve been keeping a close eye on Brisbane emcee Mallrat ever since her chilled out, though ambitious single ‘Suicide Blonde’ surfaced on Soundcloud around nine months ago.
Now gaining traction off the back of the two incredibly strong singles; ‘Suicide Blonde’ and ‘Sunglasses’ the young rapper (and regular Tigerilla collaborator) has clocked up tens of thousands of Soundcloud streams and been invited to support Allday on his huge Aussie tour which wrapped up in March.
Mallrat was also recently invited to perform at Sydney’s Luna Park Big Top as a part of the upcoming Come Together Festival which also features Aussie hip hop luminaries Spit Syndicate, Drapht and Tuka on the bill.
We caught up with the rising talent to get to know Mallrat a little better before we catch her on stage Saturday, 11th June as Come Together Festival. For more info on Mallrat stay locked to her Facebook page and for more info on Come Together visit www.cometogether.com.au.
The Beginning
“Mallrat started just over a year ago, I had just realised how badly I didn’t want to go to University and was trying to figure out something to do instead. Then I ended up at an Allday concert and it clicked that I might be able to turn music into a career.”
On The Response to The Mallrat Project
“It was pretty scary putting that first song out and I didn’t know what to expect! So it’s definitely been a crazy good response from everyone. I’m having lots of fun.”
Biggest influences
“Allday and then probably Lorde, I love how beautifully they describe real life and growing up. I’m also obsessed with The OC Soundtrack and all the weird shit on the internet.”
On Juggling School & Music
“I just finished school last year thankfully (we finish a year early in Queensland). It did get weird in year twelve though, my motivation went from being an A+ student, to doing assignments the night before they were due, to doing assignments the morning of.
I didn’t juggle it perfectly but that’s ok, I’m happy doing music instead of study right now and I’m learning things my own way.”
On Playing Shows In Venues While Underage
“I haven’t had any trouble yet, but if you walk in with confidence nobody asks any questions.”
Teaming Up With Tigerilla
The collab came about via “Facebook messenger! I sent him demos asking for advice because at the time I didn’t know any music industry people in real life. He sent back a beat for me and has been super supportive since.
We’ve got some new tracks ready to go that I can’t wait to release.”
Feeling On Playing Come Together Festival
“I’m excited! I get to play a show with my friends at Luna Park, it’s a bit of a fairytale.”
Favourite Local Acts
“Some standing Australian favourites of mine would be DZ Deathrays, Tkay, Allday, UV Boi, Lyall Moloney, Baro, Flume and Meg Mac.”
Plans For 2016
I’m looking forward to releasing an EP, playing lots of shows, and getting stuck into the first album. It sounds lame but I’m also excited to make lots of new friends and travel. It’s going to be a very fun/weird year.
