We’re all familiar with the stereotype that Texas is a state full of bootscootin’ religious fanatics. Less common but more accurate are the ol’ Texan warmth (both literal and figurative) and beautiful loneliness to be found across stretches of highways and deserts. It’s little wonder that these are exactly the sentiments evoked by The Dunes’ ‘Going Under’, considering that a Texan comprises one half of the duo.

Comparisons to Mazzy Star are obvious, but with good reason. Although Stacie Reeves’s voice is more powerful and refined than that of Hope Sandoval, it possesses that same lovely and aching desire. This is perfectly balanced with Matt Reiner’s soft and yearning slide guitar, also clearly reminiscent of the pair’s most obvious influence, but it’s an elegant throwback all the same.
