2013 has already seen a bright sign of things to come with The Good Morrows signing with General Pants’ Major Label and receiving solid Triple J and FBI Radio play with their last single, ‘Get Out of My Head’. Now the boys are back with their first single of the year, ‘Spaceman’.
Permeated in an ethereal atmosphere, ‘Spaceman’ is an immediate, alluring and exquisite slice of delicately layered future-psychedelia. While nodding to The Brian Jonestown Massacre and the pioneering spirit of 1967, this perversely tasty offering evolves within a space-glo haze of optimism.
Lead singer Jarred Scopel’s dreamy and wraithlike vocals are peppered with an amalgamation of catchy guitar licks and a reedy organ solo proving for an intoxicating opus that manages to drag up the past while foreshadowing the future. In Space. We had a chance to catch up with Jarred ahead of their single launch on Friday February 22 at Cherry Bar in Melbourne.
What’s your earliest memory of performing and who inspired you to start?
I believe it was karaoke. I was about seven on holidays with my parents belting out a terribly poor rendition of ‘Mustang Sally’ in front of a room of 40+. Perhaps one of our biggest crowds yet.
You must answer this question honestly or we steal your rider. What and where was the first gig you went to?
I think it was supergig type thing at Rod Laver Arena but many moons ago. There was Shaggy (a personal favourite of mine), Bon Jovi and Pink headlining.. I’m pretty sure it wasn’t a dream.
‘Fess up. What records have you stolen from your parent’s record collection and why?
Love Eminem?

I do vaguely remember pinching my mother’s Dawson’s Creek soundtrack. –*sings “I don’t wanna wait, for our lives to be over…”* I obviously have issues.
What’s on heavy rotation on your iPod right now?
Tame Impala currently. I find it insulting how good their new album is yet can’t seem to enough. Curse them. To Hell.
How do you find new music?
By looking for it? Ha. Ok. What’s strange is that that is not one the worst jokes I’ve told. I have a pretty dismal sense of humour. I’m just not that funny’a human. Feel free to rebut at any point. Nope? Nup? Ok. Next question please.
Do you have any particular ritual before you go on stage, or even a lucky charm you take with you?
I do not. Although I often find our bass player Steve coddled up on the bathroom floor rapping lyrics to Eminem’s ‘Lose Yourself’ before each gig. I think that might just be a co-incidence though.
If you could curate your own festival, where would it be, who would be on the bill, how many people would you let in and what features would it have?
Gee Wiz Mary Sue! My own festival? Really? Umm.. I’ve always been keen on *slight pause*, “the ladies” *winks* so maybe somewhere exotic. Brazil, Costa Rica, Portarlington. With Tupac’s hologram headlining.
When you’re Rolling Stones Big, what are you going to request on your rider: don’t be shy. We want specifics!
Probably just a sufficient amount of Calippos. I enjoy their taste. Very much. They should make a Calippo soft drink.
Because it’s more fun to do things together, which living Australian artist would you most like to collaborate with? Tell us why?
Right you are Miss Guppy. I’ve always wanted to collaborate with Delta. I think that’s mainly ‘cos I want to get inside her *pauses* mind.
What is your band’s music the best soundtrack for?
Well the second song we released ‘The Fall’ was intended to match up to one of the last scenes in The Titanic. It’s the one where Leo lets go of our young Rose’s hand and sinks to the bottom of the ocean. Hmm, it all sounds a bit odd when I say it out loud.
Where can we see you play next, what releases do you have available and where can we get them?
We have our single launch coming up on Friday February 22 at Cherry Bar for a new ditty of ours, ‘Spaceman’. It, along with all of our other stuff is available as a free download from our bandcamp: thegoodmorrows.bandcamp.com
