Sydney punks Grenade Jumper won over our collective hearts with their charming debut singles ‘Gazed’ and ‘Get Ahead’. Now, they’ve hit a home run with brand new single ‘Heat Wave’.

‘Heat Wave’ is a blissfully hopeful, heart-on-sleeve anthem that sloshes together wholesome harmonies, meaty riffs and soaring hooks and marries them with the razor-sharp lyrics to make for a truly ecstatic listen. Grenade Jumper are bearing the torch for the new generation of Australian pop-punk, and we couldn’t be more willing disciples.

“‘Heat Wave’ is ultimately about hope and acceptance – that positive energy is what we strive to exude as a band,” explains frontwoman, Bianca Davino. “Lyrically the song is about empowering yourself to understand the beauty in all aspects of life, and we really aimed to channel that drive and brightness in the instrumental.”

To celebrate the release of ‘Heat Wave’, we got Grenade Jumper to talk us through their five favourite tracks that embody big ‘Heat Wave’ energy. So check out their excellent Billy Zammit-directed video below, and see what they had to say.

Dear Rosemary – Foo Fighters

“Honestly one of my favourite Foos songs ever. The intro riff is just SO damn huge, it gets me excited every time. The way the guitars play off each other is so insanely effective, especially with the drums and bass underpinning it all, and the hook is anthemic as hell. Everything about that song drives so hard” – Lukas (Bass)

Fuckmylife666 – Against Me!

Against Me! are the epitome of modern renegade punk. Laura Jane Grace is a true punk-poet and a personal idol of mine. Transgender Dysphoria Blues is one of my favourite albums of all time and the intense level of “fuck it” energy it exudes is unmatched.

The simplistic, heartland-leaning lead line that propels the track I just find to be so sentimental, and the subtle “ahhs” that come in during the pre-chorus are just so emotive. Their discography is a rally cry to burn through life in your own power and glory, it’s really hopeful and beautiful. – Bianca (Vocals/Guitar)

A Crow Left Under The Murder – Incubus

“This track is an example of the guitar playing I wish to employ in Grenade Jumper’s music – left-field melodies and grooves that are still easy on the ears. Incubus are one of my primary influences and have shaped my understanding of music.

I just love how they hide subtle intricacies in these catchy rock bangers, and they’ve definitely opened me up to many possibilities of songwriting on guitar. My party trick is that I can play this entire album on guitar with only some mistakes” – Max (Guitar)

Knife Party – Deftones

“It’s got a big groove, huge energy and it’s such a driving song. Deftones are absolutely one of the most influential bands in my life and drumming.” – Dean (Drums)

Younger Us – Japandroids

I’ve been really nostalgic towards early 2010’s garage-punk as of late – Japandroids, Best Coast, Wavves. There’s something so inherently youthful and anthemic about Japandroids’ music – I really aim to channel that brash energy into Grenade Jumper’s music, especially on ‘Heat Wave’. – Bianca (Vocals/Guitar)
