After a couple of years of diligently touring and recording, The Black Angels are back with third album Phosphene Dream, which was released last Friday in Australia with a coming Australian tour to support it. Though Phosphene Dream is slightly more up-tempo than their previous releases and somewhat of a departure from their previously very smoky sound, it is still very much a Black Angels album. Haunting at 1300 McKinley features as a stand out on this album, and is a good place to start if this band is new to you.

Haunting At 1300 McKinley by theblackangels

Influence that they have accumulated from playing as Roky Erickson’s backing band is evident, with the surfy psychedelic undertones of his music echoing throughout the LP. While Haunting at 1300 McKinley sticks to a simple blues chord progression, in true Black Angels style, they manage to make it sound much more exciting than every other sixties revival band out there. This song is the perfect laidback anthem to spend summer listening to, though if you want to have the proper listening experience, you’ll have to listen to full album. Like all previous Black Angels releases, the song is but merely a small portion of a larger experience.
