While his former bandmates are rumoured to headline the next Big Day Out, after Flea tweeted the Chilis would be in Australia “early next year”, ex-Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante has been busy in the studio with a whole slew of new material in the pipeline.
Consequence of Sound reports that the guitar virtuoso is set to release, not only a new solo EP this July, but a new full-length album this September. First there’s the artsy-titled Letur-Lefr, followed by the equally eccentrically-named PX Funicular Intaglio Zone EP on Sep 24th.
The first of this new material comes in the form of “Glowe”, a brief but interesting combination of samples, beats, and loops against Frusciante’s textured guitar parts. It’s only a minute-and-a-half in length, but it does offer an interesting taste of what we might expect from his forthcoming releases.
The track is also available as a free download for those who preorder the new EP from John Frusciante’s website, available in a wide variety of formats including your standard digital, CD and vinyl; but also cassette tape! (keeping the dream alive…)
It’s the first new studio material from Frusciante in three years, since 2009’s The Empyrean, and while he can probably attribute the gap between solo records to his RHCP commitments, his departure from the band could spark a new creatively prolific period.
Much like the fertile phase he experienced in 2004, when Frusciante released a trilogy of albums and an EP all within the space of twelve months.
